Green Sea Turtle

The appearance of the Green Sea turtle is that of a typical sea turtle. Adult green turtles grow to 1.5 metres and have an average weight of 68–190 kg. The species average carapace length is of 78–112 cm (31–44 in). Exceptional specimens can weigh 315 kg (694 lb) or even more, with the largest known C. mydas having weighed 395 kg (871 lb) and measured 153 cm (60 in) in carapace length. In Costa Rica, the Green Sea Turtle has a healthy number of eggs nest, up to 110. Its main food source consists of mainly sea grass and algae.

Some characteristics of the species includes variable colored oval shell, four lateral shields and a pair of prefrontal scales. The turtles nest mainly on the Atlantic coast of the country with a peak of activity from June to October. Especially Tortuguero is a great place to see the nesting and hatching spectacles.
