Tapirs in Tortuguero
The Tapir is the largest mammal in Costa Rica. One must say land mammal, since whales are also mammals. This animal is another species that has fortunately increased its numbers, and on several occasions they have been seen in Tortuguero, either in the forest, swimming or crossing a natural channel or in a wetland. They are harmless, vegetarian animals that feed on plants (grasses and leaves as well as fruits and seeds of the forest). One of their predators is the Jaguar, which usually eats them. Like the jaguar, although they exist in large numbers, it is difficult to see them.
