Sea Turtles in Costa Rica

Sea Turtles of Costa Rica

The Sea Turtles are among the most amazing creatures inhabiting the oceans. A reptile, that has lived in all seas and oceans for thousands of years. There are seven sea turtle species identified up to date in the world, and 5 of them reach the coasts of Costa Rica to lay their nests and eggs. Except for the Flat back and Kemps Ridley, all other species and sub species ( Leatherback, Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill and Olive Ridley as well as the Pacific Green Turtle ) come ashore in this tiny country.

The sea turtle nesting and hatching cycle is both amazing as it is dramatic. For example, when an adult Olive Ridley comes ashore in the Central Pacific, for instance, and lays their eggs, out of 70 – 100 youngsters that actually hatch, only very few make it to adult live. They will hatch, run into the ocean ( if underway they do not get eaten by crabs, vultures, or before that, by humans ). Once in the ocean, those that actually make it there , as soon as they leave the protected reef and go into the open ocean, again, many of them get eaten by other raptors.

Nature travel and conservation, the importance of conservation

Those who actually make, will hide in sea trash ( plastic buckets and similar ) while feeding. Once they reach the Galapagos, and the coast of Choco in Colombia, where they actually live while they become adults, they start feeding for almost 20 years. Once they reach that age, they mate, and return to the same beach where they hatched, 20 YEARS ago. They trace their route back, which is a big science mystery, and reach the same exact point where they hatched, but this time, they will come ashore to lay their eggs and have the cycle continue.

Watching sea turtles nest and hatch, is a fantastic and unforgettable spectacle for nature lovers and especially children. It is important that children become aware of the importance of protecting this incredible ancient sea reptiles. There are some guided night tours, where a guide and scientist accompanies the tourists at night, patrolling the beaches in search of sea turtles nesting and hatching, the later occurs later. The scientists take advantage of the opportunity to examine and measure or count data, while the guide and tourists, enjoy the spectacle. This activity produces extra income for NGO s or local environmental organizations or environmental conscious hotels and lodges, which helps protecting the species further.
